Los Indianos Festival (carnival)
Los Indianos Festival (carnival) – this event is one of the festivities celebrated every February as part of the overall Carnival festivities that take place throughout the Canary Islands. At this time of the year, thousands of locals dress head to toe in white and hit the streets to throw talcum powder at one another for hours on end. The name Los Indianos refers to the Canarian migrants who searched for a better quality of life in Latin America in the 19th century and were warmly greeted upon their return to La Palma. The throwing of the talcum powder symbolizes the disinfectant powder which was sprinkled on the travelers to avoid spreading disease.
